Dining Table Makeover

I'm back with another furniture re-do! I have found that the best way to make old/crappy furniture look better is to paint it and antique it. I recently did this to a dresser, and I have finally found the time and motivation to finish a project I started over a year ago.

We bought this complete dining set (table with leaf and 6 chairs) for $100 on Craigslist forever ago! It was ugly, outdated, beat up and in need of some serious love. I had visions of a distressed farm table with new upholstery and tons and tons of fabulous dinner parties. Then I got pregnant. We actually found out I was pregnant the weekend after we bought this beauty, so you can imagine the size of the back burner this thing got placed on.

I liked the shape of the table, the detail on the wood work, and loved the price! But everything was wrong from the bad orange-y wood stain to the super glossy table top. It had scratches and dents all over. The chairs were upholstered in this awful blue, regal patterned fabric. Check out that basket weave backing!

I finally got to painting, sanding, distressing, glazing, re-staining the top and sealing. My mom reupholstered the seat cushions for me (learning how to sew is on my to-do list) in a sage green fabric I had lying around. Somehow I had most of the paint and stain products in my garage and have barely spent any money of this. Of course, Cody's muscles were my biggest asset when it came to some of the manual labor, like sanding. I love how the dining set turned out and I love that I spent next to nothing on this makeover. My favorite part is the new table top. The color is rich and warm and Pottery Barnish.

Now that I have finally completed this baby, I plan on covering the top with a sewing machine (borrowed from my mom), sewing book for dummies, practice scraps of fabric, and re-teaching myself how to sew. More on this soon!

  8. If the table has leaves, put them in place in the shop and double-check for stability. Finally, choose a table finish that you’re comfortable caring for over the years. Some woods will require more constant upkeep to maintain a beautiful finish.
